Is my girlfriend being practical by leaving a well-pay job for one with less pay when I'm going to grad school?

Monday, May 9th, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I live with my girlfriend in New York City. I was laid off from my job more than 6 months ago. She is an artist that works as an Executive Assistant for an established commercial construction company as her day job. At the moment, she earns ,000 a year. Every 6 months, she receives an evaluation to determine whether or not she would get a raise. She has a 401K and full health insurance because of this job. Even after I was laid off, I still contributed 50% towards all the expenses through my unemployment benefits.

I recently was accepted into Grad school in a technology program that would guarantee me work once I graduate. Even though I’m happy to be accepted, I will need to live frugally for the next two years.

Today, my girlfriend told me that she wants to leave her job just because she wants a change. She has been offered a position for ,000 as an administrative assistant for a small realty company. This is a new business, and I do not even know if she would receive quality insurance if she takes the position. I feel that the timing is way off, since I’m trying to figure out all of our expenses for the next two years. She would essentially be leaving her job for one where she could possibly be forced to live paycheck to paycheck in New York City (which is a very expensive city). Also, there is not guarantee that the position will last especially if the business folds.

Am I wrong to think that she is crazy to leave here job for another job in a start-up with nearly a 50% pay cut? Being unemployed during these economic times, I realize that having a job is a blessing while having a well-paying job is more than a blessing. Am I wrong to think that she is being impractical to make this change when I’m on the verge of attending grad school with student loans? If she loses her job while I’m in the middle of grad school, I do not know what will happen. Today, she has a secure job. I would not leave it. After I graduate, I plan to find work and move to a more affordable city (ex. Austin) with my girlfriend, so I just want her to be patient.
To clarify to anyone that does not know how to read between the lines, my girlfriend is NOT putting me through school, and she has not been paying more for the expenses since my layoff. Everything has been split 50%. It was the same way when I was employed. My girlfriend is a painter. Her dream is to be a full-time painter. If she were to pursue that, I have no problem with this. The job she is considering is NOT her dream job. She just get bored easily being at one job. I know for a fact that she runs the risk of possibly losing her job if she pursues this position. I’m just saying that I would be in no position to support her if she lost her job – especially if I’m in grad school.

To clarify, my girlfriend is NOT putting me through school. I am using my own funds. My concern is that this new job is not secure; and, if she loses this job, I do not know how I would be able to support her. She is my girlfriend, but I intend to marry her after I finish school. We have been together for 4 years already.

Insuring a '96 Dodge 3500 Diesel Flatbed?

Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at 12:03 am

I’ve been back and forth with my insurance broker on getting my new truck insured. I can’t really do a thing with it until I have it insured. It’s a ‘96 Dodge 3500 Cummins Diesel Flatbed Dually, 185,000 miles and no body damage. Single Cab. No fancy upgrades on the engine. It has previously been owned by a construction company and insured under a commercial policy. The insurance underwriters (of several companies) want me to open a commercial policy while I would like to just add it to my personal since it is for personal use.

This truck is used on the weekends only to do nothing more than pick up feed and hay or haul the horse trailer. It’s not heavy use and certainly not a daily driver.

I am currently with Nationwide and not against switching insurance companies, but prefer it to be on the affordable side. I carry 100/300 coverage on the other 2 vehicles and will be keeping that for the truck.

Any suggestions?

Contractors liability insurance?

Friday, March 18th, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Well, I am an electrical contractor.I currently have Contractors general liability insurance for commercial and residential electrical. On my policy (right next to my class code) it reads: "Electrical Work-within buildings".

I grilled my agent about whether or not I am covered for outside electrical. He said he called the underwriter (which I do not know if I believe him) and they said I was covered for outside electrical work also.

I have read my policy (over and over) and could not find anything that reads that I am covered for any kind of outside work, or pool/spa electrical.

FYI : I am a one man show. The most you will catch me doing is a kitchen remodel, or a service upgrade.

The biggest thing I would be doing outside would be pool electrical.

Any input

Hi there let me give you some background. My husband used to have a good job and make sufficient money . Now he is very rude, desperate bc he is not making money takes his anger at me. We got in a big argument bc he want to use my sons money from modeling for bills . I wanted to use that money to take him to orlando bc My husband never takes us out i mean never the kids have had an experience like that . I think he deserves it please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

auto accident claim settlement?

Monday, October 25th, 2010 at 4:54 am

I was hit by a bobcat machine (like a backhoe). The bobcat entered into the street from a construction site and hit my car as I was driving down the road. I didnt have any immediate injuries but a couple of days later my upper back was hurting so I went to the ER and was diagnosed with "back strain" and "back spasms." The bobcat is apparently covered under a general liability insurance. The company who owns the bobcat has admitted negligence. 6 days later I still dont have a rental car. They are telling me that since it is a big commercial policy it takes more time to process the claim??? I am now out of work for the 3rd day as well due to my injury. My daughter (age 9) was also in the car with me but has no complaints of injury at this point. My question is this…. what I am entitled to regarding the injuries, time out of work, loss of car (it is totaled) aggravation of not having a rental car for several days, and of course the mental anguish I am going through. My daughter is having a hard time getting in the car without fearing that we will be hit again. I dont want more than I am entitled to but I feel that they were negligent and should compensate me and my child. I do want to be fair. Any suggestions? I have not hired an attorney as of yet because I would like to settle without one if possible.
