Is my girlfriend being practical by leaving a well-pay job for one with less pay when I'm going to grad school?

Monday, May 9th, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I live with my girlfriend in New York City. I was laid off from my job more than 6 months ago. She is an artist that works as an Executive Assistant for an established commercial construction company as her day job. At the moment, she earns ,000 a year. Every 6 months, she receives an evaluation to determine whether or not she would get a raise. She has a 401K and full health insurance because of this job. Even after I was laid off, I still contributed 50% towards all the expenses through my unemployment benefits.

I recently was accepted into Grad school in a technology program that would guarantee me work once I graduate. Even though I’m happy to be accepted, I will need to live frugally for the next two years.

Today, my girlfriend told me that she wants to leave her job just because she wants a change. She has been offered a position for ,000 as an administrative assistant for a small realty company. This is a new business, and I do not even know if she would receive quality insurance if she takes the position. I feel that the timing is way off, since I’m trying to figure out all of our expenses for the next two years. She would essentially be leaving her job for one where she could possibly be forced to live paycheck to paycheck in New York City (which is a very expensive city). Also, there is not guarantee that the position will last especially if the business folds.

Am I wrong to think that she is crazy to leave here job for another job in a start-up with nearly a 50% pay cut? Being unemployed during these economic times, I realize that having a job is a blessing while having a well-paying job is more than a blessing. Am I wrong to think that she is being impractical to make this change when I’m on the verge of attending grad school with student loans? If she loses her job while I’m in the middle of grad school, I do not know what will happen. Today, she has a secure job. I would not leave it. After I graduate, I plan to find work and move to a more affordable city (ex. Austin) with my girlfriend, so I just want her to be patient.
To clarify to anyone that does not know how to read between the lines, my girlfriend is NOT putting me through school, and she has not been paying more for the expenses since my layoff. Everything has been split 50%. It was the same way when I was employed. My girlfriend is a painter. Her dream is to be a full-time painter. If she were to pursue that, I have no problem with this. The job she is considering is NOT her dream job. She just get bored easily being at one job. I know for a fact that she runs the risk of possibly losing her job if she pursues this position. I’m just saying that I would be in no position to support her if she lost her job – especially if I’m in grad school.

To clarify, my girlfriend is NOT putting me through school. I am using my own funds. My concern is that this new job is not secure; and, if she loses this job, I do not know how I would be able to support her. She is my girlfriend, but I intend to marry her after I finish school. We have been together for 4 years already.

I am employed full time and paid a salary. Can my boss have me work more than 40 hrs/wk without overtime pay?

Saturday, June 5th, 2010 at 9:39 am

I have been working for this one commercial construction company now since 1994. I have always worked a minimum of 40 hrs a week but on an average, I would work more than 45 hrs per week without being paid any overtime, and I had no qualms with that. Over the past few months though, I have been working up to 15 hrs per day 4 days a week = 60 hrs. And this work is out-of-town and away from my family. Even on my days off, I will sometimes be told to "come in" and help other employees with their projects even though they (other employees) only work a 40 hr week. I have been informed by the owner on a regular basis that "times are tough" and "we all have to make sacrifices" when he flies to the Bahama’s and cruises around on his 70 ft yacht every other week and we (the employees) have rarely been given more than 1 week vacation during any given summer…..It just doesn’t seem right. We employees have been a substantial part of the owner being able to have the luxuries that he has, and for him to have me work more than 20 hrs of overtime every week and not expect to compensate me for it…seems ridiculous and unfair and possibly illegal. Or, maybe this is just the way it is and I should shut-up and be thankful I have a job. What do you think?

What do you think is the best job for a working mother?

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 at 10:00 am

I am pregnant and recently lost my job. I am wondering what everyone thinks is the best job to have for a working mother. Staying at home is not an option for my family, otherwise I would love to stay at home and take care of my family.

So what do you think is the best job for a working mother?

I was a Veterinary Technician for 9 years before I was laid off in february due to cut backs.
I am an office manager for a commercial construction company now that has given me two weeks. The economy has hit them hard as well.

I have attended some college, but no degrees I am 28 years old. I can not afford to go back to school Otherr.

So give me your ideas. Thank You in advance!

Still very lost in life…?

We’ll let me share a quick little briefing.

I’ve been out of high school for over a year, currently 19 right now. Out of high school I was basically had an "in" to a commercial construction company as a laborer to start. We’ll as the economy has been crumbling I’m out of work at the time being. While I was in high school I had ideas of joining the military, but had been seeing this girl, and still am to this day..I don’t think I could do that to her, and our relationship, especially with the idea of still not knowing what I want to do for a living..I know this isn’t a thing some body can really answer, but I need some advice. Should I stay, and hold it out in construction, knowing what’s to come most likely, (Have a broad interest in the subject, but still want to consider other careers)? Or should i go to school to get an associates for something I’m not sure yet..The uncertainty is fairy s***ty, especially because I’m out on my own which means even community college would possibly require some sort of a loan..We’ll thanks for your time and guidance.
In addition, construction itself had been great for the money…hence while it’s lasted, and I’ve accumulated a generous amount of income to coast for a while, but I’ve been struggling with what I want to do…Not what I have to wake up in the mourning to get to go do..I have a general interest in electronics and mechanics…and an interest in law enforcement…but still…Just curious on your thoughts…keep them coming..

Does anyone know the answer?

We are located in SE Florida and with the economy and job market what it is, I feel my husband may be let go in the very near future. He is a project manager/estimator for a commercial construction company that is slowing down. He has 14 years of experience in the construction industry. He is an effective team leader that can collaborate effectively between departments to develop new and existing relationships with business partners and clients. Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com, and local job search sites or news papers have been useless. . I am also looking for transition jobs and such. We do not have the luxury at this time for him to train in vocation school or college for a new job.
I am hoping someone can possibly direct us to some leads, please. If you know any possibilities or people you could direct us to, please let me know. Please feel free to email me. I thank you so much!

Business Law 1 Question…?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Investment Properties, Inc., hires commercial Construction Company (CCC) to renovate the interior of Investment’s office building. CCC submits plans that Investment approves. CCC completes the major reconstruction, paints the interior, and buys the fixtures and funishing. Investment rejects some of the furnishings because they do not match the plans, and subsequently refuses to allow CCC to finish the work or to collect payment. Could CCC sue succesfully for payment for the entire contract?
